Hackers target Hamilton Corp. in latest attacks

Los Angeles, CA — The Hamilton Corporation, best known for its movie production studios and world-famous theme parks, was the target of a financial cyber attack Tuesday on the company’s headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Hackers, who have yet to be identified, were able to gain access to Hamilton’s encrypted accounting servers, which allowed them to transfer a total of $6 million to offshore accounts.

By the time federal authorities were notified, the money trail had gone cold. Officer Chris Holzer of the Department of Homeland Security is the lead investigator on the case, and spoke with us from his office in Shreveport, Louisiana. “We have reason to believe these criminals are highly trained cyber security experts who had the resources to pull off one of the largest heists in American history,” says Kershaw. “DHS is working closely with local law enforcement as well as the FBI and other federal agencies.”

Cyber security attacks have been on the rise this year, but the recent assault on Hamilton is unlike any authorities have seen. According to Holzer, most criminal hackers use DDoS and ransomware to infiltrate websites. These data breaches typically result in hackers gaining access to customer lists and credit card numbers. Rarely are such attacks so brazen as to steal millions of dollars in untraceable money transfers.
